Many adults have begun to plan their vacations to destinations that accommodate the serious golfer. Many of America’s most popular golf resorts reside in the Sun Belt, where weather is accommodating for outdoor activities for most months throughout the year. These resorts are geared toward providing a great vacation experience for everyone, from the advanced golfer to the weekend duffer to families.
Most golf resorts include hotels with great amenities such as swimming pools, day spas and fine dining. Resorts that do not have a golf course on the premises normally provide free travel to and from the popular golf courses in the area. At many of these resorts, special golf packages can be purchased which will include room, green fees and sometimes dining packages.
Florida is America’s most popular golf vacation destination. In addition to more than 1,000 golf courses available for public play, Florida’s beaches and popular vacation attractions, such as Disney World, make the state a very attractive option. Among the most popular courses available for play in Florida are Bay Hill, Championsgate, the TPC at Sawgrass and the many Disney courses.
Because of sunshine and warm weather nearly year around, Arizona has also become a popular destination for golf vacations. Golfers are also attracted to the many desert courses in Arizona that give them a different course perspective than they can get back home. A few of the most popular courses to play in Arizona are the TPC of Scottsdale, Sedona Golf Resort, The Legacy Golf Resort and Camelback Golf Club.
Both Northern and Southern California offer golf destinations that provide an enjoyable round of golf in some of the world’s most beautiful locales. In Northern California, only an hour from San Francisco, the Monterey Peninsula is home to the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill. In Southern California, the San Diego has many courses to choose from, including La Jolla, Palm Springs and Ranch Bernardo.
Southern Charm comes alive in South Carolina, and the state has also become a very popular destination for golfers. The city of Charleston offers several nice courses including Wild Dunes Resort and River Towne Country Club. Hilton Head, SC is home to Harbour Town and Ocean Sea Pines. Myrtle Beach, SC includes Pawley’s Island, Legends, the TPC of Myrtle Beach and Tidewater.
Finally, Hawaii speaks for itself as one of America’s favorite vacation spots, with its tropical beaches and majestic volcanoes. Hawaii is also home to some of the best and most beautiful golf courses in the world. On the island of Oahu, you can find popular courses such as Ko'Olina, Coral Creek and the Hawaii Prince Golf Club at Ewa Beach. On the popular and beautiful tropical paradise of Maui, you can find two of the most popular courses anywhere: the Kapalua Plantation Course and Pukalani.

All About Golf Carts
Most golf courses are about 7,000 yards in length, which equates to about four miles. That measurement is normally measured in an almost straight line from the tee box to the center of the cup on each hole. However, most golfers do not hit the ball in a straight line down the course from hole to hole. In fact, for many of us, it seems we spend our entire round zigzagging the course.
Until the 1960’s, most golf courses were played exclusively on foot. Golfers would carry their own bags, or pull them behind them on a pull cart. For those who were fortunate enough to play golf at country clubs, caddies were provided to carry the players’ clubs, but most were still looking at a five-mile walk. Additionally, because walking is such a slow pace, many courses would have to schedule tee times at intervals that would accommodate walking.
This changed in 1962 when Merlin L. Halvorson invented the first self-propelled golf car. A golf cart is something that is pulled and a golf car is something that propels itself. Somehow, this terminology has become confused and intertwined over the years but when someone says golf cart, the normally think of the vehicle that one rides in on a golf course.
In the 1960’s, the game and technology evolved with the development of the modern day golf car. These cars were built with gasoline motors to transport two golfers, and their golf clubs, around the course. The major manufacturers at the time were E-Z-GO, Pargo, Harley Davidson and Cushman.
The body frames, the undercarriage and suspensions closely resemble those of modern automobiles. The rubber tires are similar to those on cars, but the treads are designed in a way that the cart may be driving on grass and not damage the turf on a golf course. Controls include a modern steering wheel, accelerator and brake, where the brake also has a lock, to ensure that the car does not roll freely on inclines. Accessories on the modern golf cart include straps to secure the golf bags, a basket (for towels, balls, coolers, etc), cup holders, ball compartments and holes that golfers can slide a few extra golf tees into.
To be more environmentally friendly, many golf carts are now manufactured with electric, battery powered motors. These batteries are rechargeable, and a charge can normally last through several days and rounds of golf. However, there is still demand for the gas powered golf cars, especially on golf courses where the rolling terrain may require extra horsepower for the car to climb hills. Today’s largest manufacturers of golf cars are Ingersoll Rand (Club Car), E-Z-Go and Yamaha.

Golf Lessons
Every person who plays golf wants to shoot a low score, but they often find themselves with a handicap that hovers in a certain range for a long period of time. It is rare that someone drastically improves his or her game just by playing more often. Practicing at a driving range may help, but you are caught in the quandary of having to self-asses what you are doing right and wrong. When many golfers decide to take the game seriously, they should seek out professional instructors for private golf lessons.
The Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) is comprised of members that are the instructors of the game of golf. These instructors gained their certification to teach the game through years of studying various aspects of the game and golf course management, work programs including pro shop management, and they had to pass an aptitude test. Additionally, these golf professionals must also keep up their credentials through ongoing continuing education programs.
Most golf lessons with a Pro take place, in hour-long sessions, at a golf course or driving range, or they could take place at a golf shop that houses a computer swing analyzer. In addition to one-on-one lessons, many PGA professionals have begun to use video and computer technology to analyze the golfer’s swing. Many of the professionals have taken advanced training classes to learn the biomechanics of the golf swing. Additionally, the pros can help you with the mental aspects of the game, and give practical advice.
You may find golf professionals in your local Yellow Pages phone book, or by going online to www.pga.com. There you can find listings of local professionals that can schedule appointments to help you improve your game. Private golf lessons from a PGA Professional can range in price between $50 and $100 per hour. However, these costs are generally reduced if the golfer chooses to purchase a package of multiple one-hour lessons over a period of time.
Many people have also started planning vacations around golf academies run by PGA professionals. These academies are often geared toward a full day of instruction, and often include several rounds of golf with the instructor. It is prudent to shop carefully and ask questions when looking at golf academies because some are geared toward one-on-one instruction, and some are set up to instruct large groups of golfers at once, and may not come with the personal attention that one may desire.
